Aside from setting up a small savings account to cover any unexpected repairs, decide now, while your car is working, who you’re going to trust when it isn’t. If you wait until your car is broken, you’ll be so desperate to get it running again that you’re likely to settle for the wrong mechanic.
Here are a few things to help you find the right mechanic.
Pay attention to the details. When you go into the shop, look for clues that the team is going to handle your car with care. Is the shop neat and orderly? Or is it cluttered and littered with the by-products of past repairs? If the repair team takes good care of its own things, it’ll take good care of yours, too.
Take note of the different kinds of cars being repaired there. Is there a wide variety? Are they all exotic vehicles, or old clunkers? This will give you an idea of the kinds of cars they have experience working with. Every car is not created equal. Make sure they have the expertise necessary to handle your car, and your repair.
Find out about the shop’s reputation. Ask family and friends if they’ve heard anything about the shop, and whether the name can be trusted. If the shop has a website, look for reviews and testimonials. It’s always nice to hear what real customers are saying about the real work they’ve had done.
Find out about the repair team. Who’s going to be working on your car, and are they qualified to do it? How much experience does the team have? Remember, the more questions you ask before deciding on a repair team, the less regrets you’ll have later.
Once you’ve found the right mechanic, store the shop’s number in your cell phone. This will save you time and frustration in the event of an emergency, and make sure you’re prepared for the inevitable when the inevitable happens to you.
